Venice Isle Activities Club Meeting
January 26, 2010
President: Rich Nuzzo called the meeting to order at 9:00 am
Secretary: Theresa Moore took the roll call. All were present. There were 15 guests present.
Guest Comments: There were none at this time.
Secretarys Report: The minutes of the meeting are posted at both Clubhouses Bulletin Boards.
Treasurers Report: The treasurers report is posted at both Clubhouses Bulletin Boards. Chuck Bastin, Treasurer, reported the expenses are over the receipts for January. Sunday night movie the donations totaled $145.00 with 130 people in attendance. Because there are volunteers with donation baskets at each door, donations were increased. At the suggestion of Merle Tarr, the bags of popcorn were next to the donation baskets.
Liaison Reports: None at this time. Rich Nuzzo thanked Joyce Clark and the Liaisons for their activities participation at the Jan. 15th Residents Coffee. There were about 30 speakers for their activities. Joyce felt we did not reach the right people. Rich commented that you can not make people join these activities. Theresa Moore gave her opinion; at the Church Rummage Sale there were many volunteers, many who are non members of the Church, they all worked many hours. At the end of the sale the men set up the tables and chairs for the Sunday night movie. We should appreciate the volunteers we have and if some of the new residents do not join in these activities it is their loss. Mel Studley said the purpose of the presentation was to introduce the residents to their activity and that was accomplished.
Presidents Report: Rich Nuzzo reported he had received two reports that he has never received before. One was from Bingo and the other from the Casino Bus Trips. He has not received the last bus trip report, the bus was full and we have now made enough to pay the expense of the earlier bus trips. We will now be able to show some income to VIAC. The Bingo leader, Ed Kohut, is doing a great job; he gives a report on every Bingo and shows a balance of $786.00 in reserve after only 7 Bingo nights, payouts are fine there are no complaints. Since Ed is only here for the season, he will turn over the reserve money to VIAC treasurer to hold until he returns in the fall unless someone will take over Bingo in the summer. The reserve money is for expense and repairs to the Bingo equipment.
2010 Carport Sale: Barb Yazell presented a detailed report on the estimated cost for this new event. The registration date is Tuesday, Feb. 16th, 10:00 at Clubhouse 1. Barb listed the captains that will register any resident that intends to participate in this sale. The residents that register will be given a balloon and their home will be marked on the maps distributed to visitors. The sale is scheduled for Saturday, March 20th. Barb is requesting $250 for expenses. Trish Miller stated this is not a VIAC activity and under VIHO. Bob Demrow wants an accounting of the actual expenses. Fran Baxter made a motion to give the Carport people a donation of $250 max for expenses as presented on the January 26th outline. Motion seconded by Mel Studley. Motion passed.
Health Fair: Merle Tarr reported that it is scheduled for Feb. 19th. The presenters, about 80, will be given a light lunch. The lunch will be catered at cost by the Sorority.
The Election Committee presented their report, a simplified list of voting rules for VIAC elections. Marti Parker presented a sample ballot listing candidates that could be printed in The Islander. Diane Tarr will check with the publisher. A motion to accept the changes to the by-laws election rules was made by Fran Baxter and seconded by Mel Studley. Motion passed. Rich appointed Dell Millar and Marti Parker to the election committee. VIAC Budget for 2010 was presented. Marti Parker made a motion to accept the budget, Bob Demrow seconded. Motion passed.

Next VIAC meeting will be Feb. 23rd.

Call to Order and Certification of Proxies:
President Miller called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm, 600 Cortina Blvd., Venice, Florida and led the assemblage in the Pledge of Allegiance. He called for ballots not yet closed and closed voting. He announced the committee had certified we had enough certified proxies to hold the meeting. Quorum established. The meeting paused for a few minutes to try and rectify a recording issue with the sound system; system wouldnt record, continued on with the meeting. The meeting was noticed and the Secretary confirmed that the Affidavit of Notice as proper was posted on December 21, 2009. Mr. Miller explained that this was a meeting of the membership and there will be an actual board meeting after as they will elect officers.
Roll Call:
Present were Board Members: Brooke Appleby, Jerry Baugh, Ron Burkholder, Marna Corbus, Dick Davis, David Dowell, Jim Miller, Bill Ploughe and Nancy Stanhope.
Minutes:
The minutes of the January 16, 2009 annual meeting were read, distributed to all Board Members and posted for corrections. Anita Dibrell brought up 2 corrections to the minutes, $500.00 was listed twice for Clubhouse #1 remodel and the freezer should be 5.2%.
Presidents Report:
The purpose of the annual meeting is to elect officers for the upcoming year. President Miller spoke about the renovation to Clubhouse #1, congratulated the Manager and Staff for their hard work and announced he would not be seeking re-election.
Financial Report:
Treasurer Marna Corbus gave the following information from our financial statements for the eleven (11) months ended November 30, 2009. Our assets totaled $22,725,833. The major items are 1. Due on certificates $867,940. This is the money due from shareholders who have co-op loans with us. (The difference between the amount owed on the loan and due on certificates was $431,147). 2. Property and equipment, $19,705,297. 3. The balance in the operating account (which is interest bearing) was $374,171. Petty cash $270.00 and $209,314 in savings. Our debt Escrow MM Account balance was $327,712 and the Deferred Maintenance Account balance was $1,124,827. Our liabilities & Equity totaled $22,725,833. The major items are 1. Our Mortgage Note Payable at Wachovia Bank for $1,299,087, 2. Our Members Equity balance was $21,385,671. The total Revenues were $1,806,591. The total expenditures were $1,687,739. Excess revenue (Expenditures) was $118,862., included in expenses was $470,379 for depreciation and amortization. The reason we were able to fund the amount of money from the operating account was because of various contract changes by the manager. There were also many savings achieved on the over all budget that made it possible to complete Clubhouse #1 in 2009 without an assessment to our shareholders. I know each of you as shareholders appreciate the work that has been done and how wonderful the park looks. The economy has been bad this year, but it was responsible for the amounts we had to pay for all the capital improvements at a great savings. I want you to know that your total operating expenses through November 30, 2009 were 79.6% of the projected budget. Our total of all expenditures through November 30, 2009 was 86.9% of the budget including capital improvements and drainage projects. In other words, we were under budget for these major items. Not once in the past 7 years have we been over budget with expenses and I think this is commendable on the part of the manager and the Board of Directors, Treasurer Corbus. Full report is on file and posted.
VIAC Report:
VIAC President Rich Nuzzo gave the following report: Volunteers are the heart and soul of the park. February is the month that VIAC Budget year begins. Copies of the 2009 revenue and expenses are posted in both clubhouses. Over 40 activities received money from VIAC last year and we also paid out over $4000.00 in Federal and State Taxes. Overall, after paying all of our bills and supporting all of our wonderful activities, we made a profit of $403.61. I would like to thank our activities that produce revenue that make all of this possible. Once again, 2009 statement and 2010 Estimate budget are posted in both clubhouses. He thanked all of the volunteers.
VIRES Report:
Neville Demo gave the following report; Reminded the Shareholders VIRES is a profit company owned by the shareholders. The real estate climate is in a state of flux now. The past couple years have seen considerable decline in values and he is hopeful that the decline is ending and a more stable market is coming. For 2009, the RE company was able to pay $26,000 to the co-op in rent and management fees, considerably up from the past few years. The residents are our best sales agents. Please keep talking up your park. Full report posted and on file.
Managers Report:
(Full report on file in office)
Shareholder Comments:

Red maple trees great idea, transplant them so they dont impede the view of the sunsets. 3. Request a no U turn sign at the front entrance. Jim Parton, 941 Nettuno Dr., commented on how nice the gazebo looked at Christmas, why cant it have lighting every evening? Liz Smith, 620 Locarno Drive commented on how nice it was to return to Venice Isle and see the welcome back signs. Manager Conger responded the red maples are there to help hold the bank, when they grow they will shade the benches. To the Ends of the Earth for the Least of These
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 (NIV)
For centuries these words from Jesus have inspired millions to selfless action for the benefit of people in need. Sometime its people living next door. Sometimes its on the other side of the world. Selfless caring for people in need has been a hallmark of Christianity since its early days; it continues today.
On January 12th an earthquake devastated the impoverished island nation of Haiti. On January 13th the Evangelical Covenant Church of Venice Isle (ECCVI) decided to send $1000 to Covenant World Relief (CWR) to support their efforts in Haiti. This money came from the churchs annual rummage sale. A special offering on Jan. 17th raised an additional $785. On Sunday evening the church was given the OK to invite those at Star Entertainment to donate to CWRs Haiti fund as they departed; you donated $321. The word was spread throughout Venice Isle Estates (VIE) that the church would collect Haiti relief donations and forward them to CWR. An additional $630 resulted. To date ECCVI has sent CWR $1,736 for its work in Haiti.
This is a heartwarming example of people selflessly caring for people in need at the ends of the earth.
Last December Covenant Women Ministries hosted a salad luncheon and invited attendees to bring travel size toiletries for women getting help from Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC). Among other things, SPARCC shelters victims of domestic and sexual violence. After hearing from a SPARCC representative an attendee suggested we take up a cash collection, too. The representative was overwhelmed by your generosity. This is a heartwarming example of people selflessly caring for people in need in all Judea and Samaria.
There is one more group to consider: those closest to home. Are there people living at VIE who need help? Through a generous donation from the Indiana Dinner the church established a Pastors Benevolent Fund. Currently, this fund is to be used to help people living at VIE who are facing financial hardship, purchase food. This money is not for prescriptions, gas, maintenance fees, etc. However, we may be able to help you meet such financial challenges by helping you buy groceries. If you or someone you know lives at VIE is facing a financial hardship that could be eased by help buying groceries have them contact me. It is our hope that this program would become an ongoing and heartwarming example of people selflessly caring for people in need in Jerusalem.
The First Century Christian church was sent to people in the neighborhood, the surrounding areas, and the world. The Twenty-First Century Church has likewise been sent. Jesus told his followers, And the King will tell them, I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me! Matthew 25:40. It is my prayer that you will be blessed for the contributions you make for the people in need in Haiti, Venice, and Venice Isle Estates.

From the Library:
Happy St. Patricks Day! A few Irish blessings go something like this. May the road rise to greet you and the sun shine warm upon your fields, the wind be always at your back. And may God hold you in the palm of His hand until we meet again. May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows your dead.
You might have noticed that weve been busy as bees at the library and then again maybe you didnt. When we were finished, everything looked almost the same. Key word, almost. We had a dozen new shelves and another new bookcase to fill so of course that involved some shifting and moving of the stock.
One Monday evening a few weeks ago, we, the library staff and volunteers descended on the library and did our deed in a few hours. When we were done, everything was neat and tidy. Just different. The next day, when I saw a gentleman standing in front of the Harlequin section looking puzzled, I knew we had a small problem. (He was looking for mystery.) With that in mind, until everyone becomes familiar (again) with our new library there are additional location signs posted. This should help you become familiar with the layout of the room,
A cute side note, if you look on top of the bookcases there are some decorative bookends. The Horse bookends are on top of the Western paperback bookcase. The (Love) birds are on top of the Fiction paperback bookcases. The (Police) Dogs are on top of the mystery paperback bookcases. We didnt plan it that way. Sheila, John Congers wife, was unwrapping the horse bookends (along with the birds and dogs) they had picked up for the library, when I saw the horses I knew exactly where to put them&and the rest sort of fell in place.
Library hours are: Daily 8 am to 9:30 pm. You take outyou return. Its the honor system.

Save the Birds, Save our Lakes!
Feeding birds concentrates them in one location. This increases the chance of disease being transmitted from bird to bird. Avian pox and avian botulism is spread to other birds through their droppings and physical contact that comes with crowding and intense competition for food. Large amounts of bird droppings lead to increased bacterial counts including E-coli, in nearby bodies of water. Plus, the increased amount of nutrients from bird droppings leads to growth of algae and adversely affects our water quality.
Bread and other processed foods are not part of a birds natural diet and may lead to malnutrition from eating foods with little or no nutritional value. The balance of fiber, fats, micronutrients, carbohydrates and protein in a birds natural diet is radically different from a scavenged diet consisting mostly of human food. Birds can choke on large pieces of bread. Birds that are taught to be dependent on humans for food cannot teach their own young traditional foraging behaviors; the young may starve as a result. Feeding wild birds can lead to property damage or aggression from the birds. Geese and ducks can damage lawns by tearing up grass and eating it. They also deposit large amounts of fecal material on yards and in the water. Flocks of 50 or more birds are seen every day on some of our lakes.
We realize your intentions are good and you mean well but for the sake of our birds and their young and the preservation of our lakes, please-
DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS!

Phyllis Gabrielson- 485-6226
Computer Connections: The Computer Club gathers each Tuesday in the Rialto Room of Clubhouse 2. At 12:30, a one hour session is held for those who are learning the basics of computer usage. We are concentrating on Internet browsers, search engines, e-mail and other topics to get you started. At 1:30, we concentrate on the intermediate users and their problems and needs. Current emphasis is on use of Word Processors and ways to back-up your computer. We also will be working on organizing your computer files.
The computer room is one of the most used facilities at Venice Isles. The equipment has heavy demands placed on it. We have been working with Comcast and other vendors looking for ways to improve Internet computer service to residents. Some technical problems are encountered from time to time and we will do our best to resolve these situations.
Tip of the Month: When forwarding e-mails, always delete all extraneous material (previous recipients addresses, comments, etc.) by highlighting and deleting. Also, when sending an e-mail to multiple addresses, put all addresses in the BCC section. BCC means Blind Carbon Copy. This means only the person receiving this e-mail will see their name; you will not be sharing your friends names and addresses with everyone. These techniques are discussed at our Tuesday meetings.
Mert Johnsrud- 488-5983
The Vine Network: For those of you not familiar with the VINE (VI Network Email) and you have access to the internet, this is another means of communicating in the Park. You can sell/buy anything from soup to nuts. You can use it as a tool for home rentals or assist your friends looking for a vacation rental spot. If you have furniture for sale or need furniture- post it on the VINE.
If you want to be on the VINE list, email me at REODEL3@aol.com. When items are sent to me, I will forward to everyone on the list. Send all your questions to the person placing the ad. Im just an intermediary.
Bocce: It seems the cold weather has kind of slowed down our Bocce playing. We still have a lot that are braving the cold weather and enjoying some games. The Travel team, as of this day (2/12/10), is in third place with 4 weeks left to play. Our last home game will be on March 6th. Come out and give us your support! Our picnic will be on March 17th. We are also looking forward to our Men, Women and Mixed tournaments next month. Watch the news chann
